Recall,
if you will, an important task where you procrastinated. Now, consider how
much stress and anxiety you created for yourself by putting off this task.
Conversely, how much joy, pride and satisfaction is lost when you don't
pursue an important goal? Clearly, the price you pay for procrastination
is high. The fact that you are reading this indicates you probably have
come to a similar conclusion. In fact, managing procrastination may be the
single most positive action you can make to improve the quality of
your life.
What Makes Us Procrastinate?
Procrastinators often suffer from strong negative self-talk and a cruel internal critic. Some common themes of procrastination self-talk include:
- "The task is really awful"
- "I'll do a terrible job"
- "Its not fair (ie The exams are ridiculous, I can't stand that instructor)"
- "It must be perfect. Its not worth doing otherwise."
- "Its ok if I quit, it doesn't matter"
- "Someone else will take care of it"
Naturally then, our minds find a way to divert attention to a more pleasurable temporary escape (ie playing, watching TV, sleeping, etc). The result? Rushing at the last minute. Panic. Anxiety. This is usually followed by more internal criticism:
- "you are lazy"
- "you always wait to the last minute"
Without overcoming your negative procrastination internal dialogue, you are certain to continue a pattern of procrastination.
Breaking The Pattern
Since your behavior follows your thoughts, it is possible for you to instill powerful positive self-talk and increase your motivation dramatically. Imagine what would happen if your automatic inner dialogue went like this instead:
- "I want to accomplish this in the best way possible"
- "I have ample capacity to accomplish all tasks I have before me."
- "I know I'll do fine and I will give myself time to do it right."
- "This is worthwhile and I will feel great when it's finished."
- "I am eager to get going on this."
The result? You feel motivated. Now projects begin to get done. To-do lists shrink. You enjoy the satisfaction and
sense of peace that comes from knowing the important projects in your life are handled. You deserve to feel this joy, peace and self-confidence. Read and speak these positive affirmations several times over the next few days. When you notice yourself slipping into procrastination, write down the thoughts that you are having. Make this a habit and see the powerful difference it makes in your life.
